Math Teacher Awards
Congratulations to Ms. Leigha Jordan of Valley Springs Middle School on being selected the BCS Math Teacher of the Year for 2016-17. Ms. Jordan has been at Valley Springs MS for the past 5 years teaching both 8th grade mathematics and Math 1. Ms. Jordan is a district wide teacher leader who is actively involved with the BCS middle school math leadership team. She has been instrumental in sharing best instructional practices both with her peers at VSMS and across Buncombe County. In her written application she wrote, "I create an atmosphere that allows my students to take ownership in their learning and hold them accountable. Fellow teachers are always welcome in my classroom to observe and learn and provide me feedback so I can continually improve my skills as an educator.. . From the start of each year to the end of the last day, I create an environment in my classroom where students feel safe and validated as individuals. I agree each and every student with a smile and firm handshake as they walk through my door, followed by a "Good Morning!" or "How are you?" This simple gesture lets the students know I care for them as individuals and starts the class on a positive note... They [students] reason abstractly and grow as proficient mathematical thinks each day."
Ms. Jordan will be recognized at a statewide awards ceremony and reception during the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference this October in Greensboro. She will also be recognized during the November meeting of the Buncombe County Board of Education. Congratulations to Ms. Jordan!!!
