Buncombe County
Middle School Mathematics

Buncombe County School’s middle school mathematics curriculum is built upon standards that define college and career readiness. The curriculum is designed to be rigorous, innovative, and challenge students to think critically and effectively to solve problems. Our curriculum is engineered by our own teachers anchored with Connected Mathematics, is aligns to NC College and Career readiness standards, and is designed to build upon the strong foundational skills students learn in elementary grades.

Our middle school mathematics program is grounded in concepts that include the number systems, expressions and equations, geometry, statistics and probability and functions. As students develop an in-depth understanding of these concepts in middle school they become confident learners and will be fully prepared for the rigorous high school math curriculum.

In a middle school math classroom students are immersed in modeling, reasoning, and the application of mathematics. They solve challenging problems and share their solutions using graphs, equations and expressions, tables, and words. They are engaged in conversation with peers to enhance vocabulary, work through problem solving, and apply what they learned to new problems and real world situations. BCS middle school math teachers are constantly asking questions and observing student understandings and misconceptions. Teachers use this information to meet the needs of every learner.
